The Pan-African Constructive Journalism Initiative (PACJI) is a continental media network established in Tanzania in July 2023 to advance constructive, ethical, and solution-oriented journalism across Africa. The initiative brings together journalists, editors, media managers, communication professionals, researchers, journalism lecturers, universities, media organizations, civil society institutions, and development partners.
PACJI was established in response to the need for African media to move beyond reporting mainly on crises, conflicts, corruption, poverty, and institutional failures. While recognizing journalism’s essential watchdog role, PACJI promotes reporting that critically examines societal challenges and explores credible responses, practical lessons, emerging opportunities, and pathways towards improvement
Constructive journalism does not minimize problems or protect institutions from public scrutiny. Instead, it strengthens journalism by promoting accurate, independent, balanced, evidence-based, and community-centered reporting. It enables journalists to inform the public about both the causes of societal challenges and the efforts being made to address them.
PACJI is guided by integrity, transparency, professionalism, inclusiveness, innovation, independence, accountability, and collaboration. Since its establishment, it has engaged media professionals from different African countries through training, professional dialogue, knowledge exchange, and networking activities.
